Girls Varsity Basketball Makes History at SPC Championship

The Houston Christian High School, varsity girls basketball team took the SPC State title Saturday with an 87-43 win over Houston area rival Episcopal High School. Their title win also completed their undefeated 33 win season, making them the first Mustangs girls team to win a Championship.

Houston Christian entered the championship tournament as a united and powerful team, and coach Ryan Bickham, credits the team's success to its hard work and commitment to focusing on what matters.
"It's just us becoming a team together. We have the talent. It was just about us becoming a team and loving each other, understanding, putting God first," Bickham said.

This team was a driving force all season, and that success also goes back to being United. Most of the players have played together not just in a Mustang uniform but in other leagues like Nike-sponsored CyFair Elite since 8th grade. They are "battle-tested," as Bickham comments.

Senior Kayla Mackel, who will play for Colorado College in the fall, knew their goals were attainable this year, "Going into this year, we knew that we were going to be a really good team, so we just had to fight and practice to get in shape, work on our plans, make sure that we were not making too many mistakes on court, and number one thing, making sure we're playing together."

We are so proud of the unity, mentality, and performance on and off the court. Go Mustangs!
