A Place to Shine

A dynamic and diverse group of students, the theatre program at Houston Christian High School encompasses everything from a Comedysportz improv team to mainstage plays and musicals, from technical theatre design to stage management and production. HC Theatreworks offers 40+ student leadership positions. Regardless of where your interests lie, there’s a place here for you!

The Houston Christian theatre program develops young performers through active learning. Students are challenged in all areas of creativity. The Acting theories of Konstantin Stanislavsky, Uta Hagen, Stella Adler, Ion Cojar, Robert Lewis, Lee Strasberg, Freddie Hendricks, Ivana Chubbuck, Viola Spolin, and Sanford Meisner are explored, studied, and used to approach the realization of dramatic texts on the stage.

Students will have the opportunity to hear from professionals and Houston Christian alumni working in the industry with renowned companies on Broadway. These artists bring potential internships and training to our students from the best theatres in Houston and the nation.

HC Theatreworks challenges students’ creativity and artistic skills through an active production program that melds scholarship with theory while fostering students’ understanding and appreciation of the arts. Houston Christian’s annual production line-up is some of the best Houston has to offer.

  • Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat

The plot of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat can be divided into two acts, with the first act covering Joseph's journey to Egypt and his time as a slave, and the second act covering his rise to power and his reunion with his family. Joseph is sold into slavery by his brothers and taken to Egypt, where he works for the wealthy Potiphar. Joseph is thrown in jail after refusing Potiphar's wife's advances, but while imprisoned, he discovers his ability to interpret dreams. Then Pharaoh hears of Joseph's talent and asks him to interpret his dreams, which Joseph correctly predicts are omens of famine. Joseph is given a position of power in Egypt and becomes the second most powerful man in the country. Joseph's brothers travel to Egypt to beg for food during the famine, and they are brought before Joseph. Joseph tests his brothers' honesty by putting a golden cup in his youngest brother Benjamin's sack, and when Benjamin is accused of theft, his brothers rush to his defense. Joseph then reveals his true identity and sends for his father Jacob, and the two are reunited at last.

The annual Tommy Tune Awards, on May 4, 2023, proved to be an unforgettable experience for the students of HC Theatreworks, who showcased their talents in a high-octane rendition of "Sit Down You're Rockin' the Boat." Their performance was met with resounding applause from fellow theater programs in the area, who lauded the school's professionalism, polish, joyfulness, and enthusiasm. In fact, one parent was so impressed by the turnout of supporters that they inquired if the entire school was present. Another school was taken aback by the abundance of talent among such a small school, exclaiming that HC Theatreworks "packed a punch." It was an honor for Houston Christian to be the only private school to make it to the Finalist for Outstanding Musical, placing among the top 7 theater performances in the greater Houston area. Such an achievement is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the students, staff, and supporters of HC Theatreworks.

  • What is ComedySportz?

The ComedySportz Houston High School League is currently in 17 Houston area schools.

"We play improvisation as a team sport, with two teams “competing” for audience laughs. The stage is covered in turf, there’s a referee and the players are in uniform. It’s not comedy about sports; it’s comedy played as a sport. Because everyone knows what a sport is, there is immediated buy-in from the audience. People who have never been to the theatre before walk through the door because they’re not intimidated. Because it’s improvisational, it’s always different, and you will have fans that come to every performance."
