Congratulations to the 2022 Mustang Swim Team for a third consecutive record-breaking season. Eight Houston Christian High School swimmers qualified in two individual events and two relays for the SPC Championship meet held in Arlington, Texas, on February 11, 2022.
Seniors Sofia Beaver and Matthew Thibault, Junior Derby Watson, sophomores Kendall Wallace, Jordan Bany, and freshmen Lucca Incerpi, Micah Gordon, and Nathaniel Sun all qualified.
Leading the way was sophomore Kendall Wallace. Wallace beat the HCHS school record at SPC Championship prelims in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.42.
Then, hours later, it broke it again with a personal best time of 24.19 and placed 2nd overall. In addition, Wallace broke her own HCHS school record in the 100 Breaststroke with a time of 1:06.17, beating her time of 1:07.77 set last year.
Overall, the HCHS Swim team had six top 10 times at the SPC Championships.
The HCHS Girls 200 Medley Relay of Derby Watson, Kendall Wallace, Jordan Bany, and Sofia Beaver placed 8th overall with a time of 2:04 .52; Kendall Wallace with 50-yard freestyle in 24.19, and in the 100 Breaststroke with a time of 1:06.17; Derby Watson in the 100 Butterfly placed 9th overall with a time of 1:06.7, who then turned around in the next event and swam the 100 Freestyle ranking 10th overall with a time of 59.97.
In the Girls 200 Freestyle Relay, HCHS swimmers Sofia Beaver, Jordan Bany, Derby Watson, Kendall Wallace placed 10th overall with a season-best time of 1:52.36.
This swim season, HCHS girls also achieved personal best times. Senior Sophia Beaver earned this in the 100 free in 1:04.91 and 50 free in 27.40, while sophomore Jordan Bany’s season-best time included the 50 freestyle in 30.75 and 100 Backstroke in 1:25.73.
Likewise, swimmers also achieved personal best times in the HCHS Boys Medley Relay (Backstroke, Breaststroke, Butterfly, and Freestyle). HCHS Boys Medley Relay with Lucca Incerpi, Micah Gordon, Nathaniel Sun, and Matthew Thibault placed 13th overall with a season-best 2:02 .89.
Additionally, the HCHS Boys Free Relay included Matthew Thibault, Lucca Incerpi, Micah Gordon, and Nathaniel Sun, who placed 11th overall with a season-best 1:48.07. The boys also achieved personal best times in the 50-yard freestyle. Matthew Thibault, 24.20, Nathaniel Sun, 24.77, and Micah Gordon, 28.78.
Personal best times were earned this year as well. This season junior Matthew Thibault achieved personal best times in 100 freestyle with 55.99. Freshman Nathaniel Sun achieved personal best times in the Boys 100 Butterfly with a 58.05 and in the 100 Free with a 57.17. Lucca Incerpi had personal best times in the Boys 100 Backstroke with a 1:14.91 and in the 100 Freestyle with a 1:03.66. Freshman Micah Gordon in the Boys 100 Breaststroke with a 1:20.31.
On a final note, HCHS Eden Droog could not attend the SPC Championship meet; however, she had achieved 1:30.99 in her 100 backstrokes at the SPC South Zones Championship University of Houston. She dropped a fantastic 12.26 seconds off her entry time for the most improved swim of the season.
